After that long cover story, we're back to cover request for a while! these usually last from twenty to twenty-five chapter (thirty at best), so expect the newest cover story by then. Anyways, this week's cover request is very straightforward, but quite humorous as well, it appears that after zoro and sanji fell asleep next to each other, having either fought before so or having hit each other in their sleep (as indicated by the bruises and swellings), they both raise their arms in their sleep in victory, dreaming of having beaten the other one, on sanji side, he dreams of a defeated zoro on the ground with his blade shattered in pieces, with nami congratulating him for victory. On zoro side, he imagines himself having stuck sanji into ground of the sunny deck, with chopper praising him for his victory instead.
We get a proper shot of what little remains of Oden Castle, mostly the stone base and some parts covered in trees. Below you can spot a door, which was used to access inside the stone platform and into the castle from below.
Finally, a look at Oden! He looks like a middle aged man wearing a kimono, but the most interesting details is his hat, appearing to look like a traditional chef hat (or perhaps, this “hat” is just an extension of his hair). With a stereotypical Italian mustache on top, I wonder if Oda is trying to make him look specifically like a chef, given how big of a theme food seems to be regarding Oden.
Also, his sword appears to have a flower-shaped hilt.
So, I guess I should talk about what Oden actually is after all this time. Oden (おでん) is a Japanese dish that consist af throwing a bunch of boiled ingredients into a bowl, such as eggs, daikon and fishcakes, stewed in a dashi broth. Of course, there are plenty of variations, with many different ingredients varying from the most simplistic and cheap dishes to carefully-crafted expensive delicacies. There are so many varieties that Oden might as well be it own gastronomical branch, as there are many shops in Japan dedicated to Oden alone.
During the flashback of his execution in chapter 819, Orochi exclaims “What is the purpose of an Oden if not to be Boiled?”, as Oden was executed by being boiled alive, due to the nature of his name.
Sukiyaki (剥焼) is, unsurprisingly, another traditional Japanese dish. It is made of sliced meat, which is cooked with vegetables and various ingredients, served in a pot of broth just like Oden (no wonder the two are father and child). It’s common to slowly simmer it at the table where it is eaten, a practice commonly found in Japan but rarely in the rest of World. Sukiyaki are common of Bonenkai, parties hosted towards the end of the year.
Kin’emon claims that Oden often got into violent fights, which might seem out of characterat first for the benevolent Oden. But if you recall what Kanjuurou said back in Zou, Oden was always a bit of a rebel, trying to go against the rules and doing what believed to be right, similarly to Luffy in a certain way.
Also, on a small note, Kin’emon makes mentions of the flower capital back then, which means it has been a part of Wano long before Orochi even took over.
This situation, while obviously exaggerated, isn’t actually that far from how Japan was. You see, often large conflict ended in Japan, the Country actually entered a long period of peace . This meant that a lot of Samurai turned into Ronin and many of them turned to thievery as they didn’t have any job to fulfill. With that said, these were more isolated cases of thievery than the big brawls depicted in this chapter.
Oden fought someone called Ashura Douji, the most powerful of all the ruffians in Wano. In Japanese culture (not to be confused with the Muslim Ashura), Ashura (阿修羅) are beings with three heads and six arms, demigods of vicious personalities that only seek destruction. You might also be familiar with the Ashura through Zoro’s Kyutoryu attacks. As for Douji, it essentially means “Demon offspring” and is found in the names of certain Demons such as the Ibaraki-Douji. Both parts of Ashura Douji’s name indicate his violent and demon-like behavior.
Oden turned the rogues into earnest workers; you can even see some of them being the same between the two panels, such as the large guy with big earlobs.
And hey! This is our first time properly seeing how Oden Castle looked like!
To no one’s surprise, Zoro lost his path far away from the group, but as usual. He blames it on everyone getting lost instead of him, despite the fact that Komacchiyo is with them at Oden Castle. He sheathes the Sandai Kitetsu, as he just finished slaying the large tiger that attempted to eat him.
And man, can I just say… wow. This might just be a small panel. But Wano’s vistas are simply gorgeous, even for a factory-infested wasteland such as this one. It might just be me, but the river cutting through the side, the traditional bridge on the way that the large rock structures tower over them, it’s simply gorgeous.
Zoro spots a wharf and decides to board a boat. Just where the hell is that going to take him? Next thing we’ll know he casually wandered into Onigashima and is going to casually clash with Kaido on the streets.
Inuarashi is here! As we thought, with Momo being here, it means that the dog had to be somewhere nearby. He likely ehm…”parked” Zunisha not that far from here, as he is seen with only five of his men, three of them being the three musketeers. He’s wearing the same outfit he had back in Zou, only this time he’s donning an amigasa. Also, nice to see that his wounds have already healed.
Once again, we see the tall mountain in the background. This shot seems to indicate that it might be quite close to the sea, though this could just be perspective messing up.
Sanji is shocked at Kin’emon talking about Oden’s relationship with Roger and Whitebeard, since he was the only one in the party that wasn’t there at Zou when Inuarashi and Nekomamushi talked of Oden’ past, as he was already heading to Whole Cake. So it’s nice that Oda left this little touch to keep consistency.
As kin’emontells his tale, Law stands outside with Shachi, Penguin,Bepo and Komacchiyo, having already heard the tale in detail from Kin’emon before, just like Zoro.
At first we assumed that Oden died in the fires of the castle, as Kin’emon claimed that Oden “Gave his life to safe that of his retainers”, but I guess at this point he simply meant it more figuratively.
Almost everyone in the room, aside from Luffy and Sanji, tear up from hearing the story, even someone like Nami who a little harder to make emotional that someone like Chopper or Brook.
Okay so, this is piece of information is actually very important, as it puts the timeline into perspective. At first, we assumed that Inuarashi and Nekomamushi returned to Zou before Oden reached Raftel, as the two claimed that they weren’t able to join Oden on the journey to the island. At first we assumed this was due to their feud as they returned to Zou, but it’s now clear that his isn’t the case. Basically, this means that for another separate reason, Inuarashi and Nekomamushi weren’t able to join Oden on his journey to Raftel, but joined him again after he returned to Wano. It’s only after Oden’s death that the feud him again after he returned to Wano. It’s only after Oden’s death that the feud between the two started, likely due to the death of their master, blaming each other (recall Momo’s words on Zou, he was sad that the two were arguing ”because of his father”, meaning that was the reason for the start of their feud). With that, they must’ve barely escaped and returned to Zou, around 20 years ago.
As a bonus piece of information, Carrot claimed that when Inuarashi and Nekomamushi returned she wasn’t born yet, which means our dear rabbit mink’s age must be around 19 years old or less, around as much as we expected.
This also means Momo was born 28 years ago, in 1496.
Wow.. Wow!!! There’s a lot of information to be gleaned from this pic, so let’s go through one by one. First of all, we get a better look at the castle from here: the Central building isn’t that large by itself (through do not be fooled, perspective makes it look even tinier), with a lot of the platforms housing stairs that lead to the castle, decorated by a beautiful garden.
Second, Kaido! You might notice that he’s actually looking a bit younger. His mustache is much shorter and his beard is missing altogether. He already had his tattoo, but interestingly the scar on his right side is completely missing, meaning he hadn’t received it yet. During Momo’s flashback in Zou we actually saw Kaido with a beard, but this was likely just a small mistake by Oda as he hadn’t though about the change in design yet.
Thirdly… oh my god.. are those.. the three calamities?!! Yes, it seems like these might really be Jack, Queen, King. Starting from the left, the first appears to very clearly be Jack. The size of his horns, his cape, and the hair are exactly the same, down to same bowl haircut and the braids on his sides, just looking slightly younger than he does now.
The nest is this large imposing person, with a spiked mask rather similar to that of Pica and hair flowing behind their head. It’s hard to say if this is Queen of King, as it could really be any of the two, but if I had to guess I’d say she’s Queen, given the next calamity:
Finally there’s this third calamity, which looks like a.. ehm… bald fellow with a big mustache and a large grin? Yeah, it’s a bit of an add design for who might turn out to be one of the strongest characters in the series, but I’d have to assume this isn’t Queen due to the more male Design, unless King is the Pica=masked fellow and this is just another subordinate, but I’d find that odd
Also, what are those.. spikes behind them? Are they spears of some kind? Are they related to some of their powers? What could they be?
And finally, fourthly. There’s Oden’s retainers below. From right to left, O-Kiku, Kanjuurou, Kin’emon, Raizou and.. huh?! Who the hell is that? Well, yeah, seems like he’s a fifth retainer of Oden that we hadn’t seen yet. He also appears later during the scene with Toki, but alongside her and her daughter, he didn’t make the time leap. How come? The only thing we can really glean from this design is that he appears to be relatively large, almost as much as Raizou (even if he is the shorter of the fiver) and sports a kimono and a large amigasa hat. This makes five retainers that we know (out of 11 graves total, with four of them being for the Kozukis), so who were the other two graves for? Inuarashi and Nekomamushi perhaps?
Alright, so first of all, Hiyori. We saw fourth Kozuki grave last chapter (also visible in this chapter), which is now clear to be Hiyori’s grave. As a heads up, this doesn’t necessarily confirm in any way if Hiyori is still alive or not, as Momo also has a grave there. She has a classic Japanese bob haircut and appears to be just as young as Momonosuke if not younger. The name Hiyori is basically the Japanese word for “Weather”. But if this has any relation to her character is yet to be seen. Just like her mother and the other retainer, she doesn’t seem to have leapt ahead in time, so what happened to her? Surely she’ll play a bigger role story, but she clearly doesn’t seem to have leapt, so I wonder if she survived in another way.
And now, of course, the biggest mystery of all: Kozuki Toki. Her design is relatively simple, with long slick hair, very similar to O-Kiku’s. Most interestingly, however, is the fact that she’s said to be from long, long ago, meaning that, knowing Oda, it’s quite likely she might date back all the way from perhaps even before the Void Century! We’ve always assumed that the reason Momo could control Zunisha is because he was Oden’s Child, but what if this was not because he’s the chosen Kozuki descendant, but actually the direct child of one of those who originally exiled Zunisha? If it’s really true that Toki has witnessed over 1000 years of history, imagine the secrets she must hold! From the origins of the Great Kingdom, to the Great War of the Void Century, all the way until Roger’s Era! Not just that, but this means she might have the oldest devil fruit in the entire series, meaning that devil fruits could have existed since the times of the Great Kingdom, as many of us had thought. So many mysteries surrounding Toki, yet so little details!
Through the power of the Toki Toki no Mi (a Paramecia by the looks of it), she leapt ahead in time forward and forward again, until she got to here (and she still looks relatively young). She claims that this is her terminus, or final point of her journey: this begs the question, why can’t she leap ahead of time anymore? Well, there’s two possibilities: one is a limitation, perhaps she cannot leap ahead herself. The other might be suggested by the dialogue, as one of the retainers exclaims “…!! Lord Oden…”. This could imply that the reason she can’t bring herself to go any further is because she lost the man she fell in love with and couldn’t continue onwards without him? In fact, could it be that the title of the chapter subtly refers to her love for Oden?
Toki then decides to send them into the future, trough I wonder why specifically 20 years. Is it a limitation of her fruit? Why send them so far ahead in time, while the people of Wano suffered? There’s also another question: why she might not have leaped might be explained by what I said before, but what about the other retainers? Or Hiyori? Why not send her ahead as well?
The leap in time is signaled by a flash of light. The group falls to the grounds (as indicated by the “Thud”), possibly because they might’ve been on a higher floor that simply doesn’t exist anymore in the present day.
The group realizes their leap in time by looking at the sight before them: the back of Bakura, with nothing more than a wasteland behind it and tall chimney’s coming off the factories on the mountains, an almost dystopian sight compared to the Wano they once knew.
Kin’emon also explains in detail the construction of the factories, with how the inhabitants were used as slaves, without even being fed properly. Notice the contrast between the member of the beast pirates controlling them, who is fat and rounded, showing how much food he has eaten, while all the workers are pretty much shriveled up corpses.
On the other side of the page instead, the Flower Capital, with those who blindly followed Orochi also appearing satiated, laughing around and ignoring the dire situation that the country is in.
We are introduced to yet another character, a follower of Oden called Jibu’emon. Jibu is a common name Japanese, usually meaning “minister”, with “ ‘emon ” also being a common way to end names, similarly to Kin’emon, which was originally meant for those who acted as guards.
Also, another fact I’d like to talk about, being that they were aware that they had leapt in time. At first, I thought they weren’t ware, but their actions still make sense even if they were aware. For example, Kin’emon thinking that Zoro was the one who originally stole the Shushui might only have been a lapse in judgement as he probably hadn’t yet adjusted to being 20 years ahead in the future, which lines up with what I originally said. As for Nekomamushi saying that only a few month had passed since Oden’s death… well yeah, it still makes perfect sense, as he was referring to how long it had passed for Momonosuke since the death of his father. And if Raizou explained to him how they leapt in time, it all lines up, he was simply mentioning how from Momo’s perspective it had only been a few months.
Jibu’emon also pretty much confirms that the retainers are the Nine Red Scabbards, as he was looking for their remains. This means that the fifth retainer we say in the flashback (assuming he didn’t leap or something else happened), did not die in the fire (since his remains aren’t here), meaning he might have escaped in some other way (maybe with Hiyori?)
And they, do you recognize him? It’s the same earlobes guy again, only now a little older!
Oden’s followers all carry the mark of the moon on their ankles (pretty dumb if you ask me, considering Orochi is pursuing them). This is because, as I mentioned last time, Kozuki is moonlight written backwards in Japanese. I’m sure that the introduction of this mark by Oda might have something to do in the future perhaps to spot a traitor or something, so keep it in mind.
Also, I’d like to take a moment to point out a little, but fascinating detail: in this shot we can spot some birds typical of the Wano country. But if you spot some birds typical of the Wano country. But if you recall, this design is actually pretty similar to the design Kanjuurou used to draw his escape sparrow back in Dressrosa. The reason for this is because he modeled it exactly after how the birds look like in Wano. Such attention to detail
We were already able to piece together all these events before, but it’s nice to get a refresher. They shipwrecked near Zou, With Raizou barely making it while the other landed at Dressrosa. After that, Jack used a vivre card of someone on Zou (a detail omitted here, but that was mentioned before) to raid the country and attempt to capture Raizou. Meanwhile, at Dressrosa, Doflamingo was ordered by Kaidou to capture them, but Momonosuke was accidentally abducted by Caesar’s men, with Kin’emon doing his best to try save him as Kanjuurou stayed behind.
Just as Kyouushirou said, Orochi’s men seem to believe that they are ghost, which, just as I explained last time, is why they are called the “Ghost of Wano”, even by Law. This also explained why Holdem called the Kozuki a “clan of evil ghost”. However, it seems Kaido doesn’t quite believe this, as Jack was fully aware that he was looking for Raizou and Kanjuurou epven claimed the reason Kaido pursued them is because he wanted to know what Oden knew of the True History, thinking that he might have passed it into them (despite them claiming they knew nothing).
Someone replies to O-Kiku in apology, with Sanji getting annoyed over it. It’s possible this might be Kin’emon, given how he was going off the original dialogue, with Sanji getting annoyed at their relationship as he was trying to court her before.
Ehm.. not being exposed.. are you sure you’ve actually gotten that, Luffy ?
What a massive array of allies! There’s a lot of character in here: On the top row, from left to right, Nekomamushi, Inuarashi, Carrot, Sicilian, Wanda, Bepo, Law, Robin, Brook, Sanji, Luffy, Chopper, Nami, Zoro, Usopp and Franky. On the fifth retainer, Raizou, O-Kiku, earlobes guy, Momo, Kanjuurou and Kin’emon!
I wonder what commander in this case refers to. We might assume it’s Kaido but it’s possible Orochi might be visiting due to the festival, meaning that they might be referring to the shougun (especially given Toki’s prophecy).
Wait, wait, wait, wait!!! There’s so many details all packed in this panel alone, oh my god! Where to even begin… Well, First of all, the time: Two weeks. If you don’t remember, that’s actually one week after Reverie ends (we’re technically still on the first day of the Reverie, so six days left), meaning that we might hop back to Mariejois long before Kaido is Defeated!! The worst case scenario for this however, is if Oda skips the Reverie entirely and we only learn about it once it’s completely over (Oda, you might better not to try anything funny here >:()
Second, the fire festival. There are quite a few different fire festivals across Japan and they consist of lighting big fires in several peculiar ways for religious or cultural reasons. In this case we’ll likely see a similar festival over that night, involving a large fire in some way or another
Thirdly, as the translation suggest, there’s the possibility that the raid here might be referencing the raid of the forty-seven ronin, where a group of 47 samurai avenged the death of their master, a Daimyo of Japan. It’s possible there could be a connection here, with Oden being a Daimyo, but it’s a bit too early to say.
But most importantly of all… Onigashima! This is the land we’ve seen time and time again where Kaido resides, the snowy island with the large horned structure. This does confirm that Wano is probably formed of several islands (Unless Onigashima is somehow considered separated to Wano but still ally to it), similarly to Japan, with Onigashima probably being like Hokkaido due to its winter-like weather (you can also tell it’s very close to rest of Wano due to the shape of the clouds in the background). On top of that, there’s this gigantic skull with horns that seems to mark the entrance to the island and this might in fact be the mysterious horned structure that we’ve all wondered what it is over the past few years! The shape isn’t quite the same though, so either Oda just slightly changed the design over time or it might be another horned-shaped building on the island
Through of course, this island includes a fundamental reference, being one of the central location of Momotaro. The whole point of Momotaro’s journey is to go to the island of Onigashima to slay the evil Oni (Demon), which in this case is paralleled with Momonosuke going to Onigashima to slay the ebil Kaido (Since Kaido has been shown to be heavily themed after an oni), Through in this case with case with the help of many others.
To put it into perspective, Onigashima was first teased in chapter 793. That was July of 2015! We finally got to see the residence of the Yonko!
With that, the stage is set! The War of Wano will take place in two weeks on Onigashima Island! The fact that it takes place over a night is likely a reference to how Toki mentioned that nine samurai would come to oppose Orochi on a moonlit night, which is also tied to minks being able to use Sulong (which is likely why Kin’emon and the others planned it all on this night). Law, the man who planned Kaido’s downfall from the very beginning, Momonosuke, the true heir of Kozuki wishing to defeat the evil Kaido, Luffytarou, the hero that will defeat the yonko to get that much closer to becoming Pirate King and Inuarashi, Oden’s loyal vessel ready to unleash the army of minks. These four will come together to bring down one of the four emperors! KAIDO!
